Steve Jobs. 1955-2011.

Today Steve Jobs, a truly remarkable visionary and perfectionist, passed away.  As I write this, it still is hard for me to wrap my mind around the fact that yes, this is reality.  I could go on and on reflecting on all of the things Steve did, and all of the great products that created.  As you know, that list would be quite extensive.  Rather than doing that, I’ll give a more personal account of how Steve Jobs touched my life.

When I was in high school still trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life, I had been buying gadgets left and right.  If it had batteries or plugged into power, I’d buy it or plead for my parents to buy it for me.  I’ve always been fascinated by gadgets whether they be music players, phones, computers, or something else entirely.  It’s always been an interest of mine.  But it wasn’t necessarily a passion or love of mine.  It was just an interest and a hobby.

Fast forward to my senior year of high school just before I went to college.  I had to get my first laptop.  After first having a Dell & having countless issues, then an IBM only to find out it wouldn’t be best suited for what I needed out of it, I landed on getting a Powerbook G4.  It was only a mere hours into using it that I discovered there was something very unique and spectacular about it.  I suddenly wasn’t just amazed by the fact that it was a computer to fiddle with; It was a marvel of modern design too.  The night I came home with that laptop was a turning point in my life of dealing with technology, and the way I thought about it from then on.  Instead of thinking a computer was no more than a cheap collection of parts that I’d just hope wouldn’t fall apart on me, it was a well thought-out, elegantly simple work of art that one could love the same way they would a car.

From there, I was hooked.  Once I owned my first Apple product I just wanted to know what they were going to do next.  The way Steve made each announcement so exciting and so riveting made me pay attention to more than just the gadgets themselves, but the company and the ‘big picture’.  I started following the tech industry constantly, first with TechTV and then later with TWiT (This Week in Tech).  It was the combination of Steve Jobs making excellent products and Leo Laporte appealing to the broadcaster in me to cover them that lead me to discover my main goal in life: To combine my years of radio experience with my passion for this technology and become involved with the tech media.  So in some ways, I feel like I could thank Steve Jobs & Apple for helping me find my niche in the world.

So, yes…physically and in body, Steve has left us.  And I know I, along with millions of people around the world will surely miss him.  But if we’ve paid attention and learned anything from the example he’s set by being the fearless bold leader that he was…then his philosophies, his ideas, the perspectives he’s shared with us, and his influence can live on forever.

Skype “Out”?

***UPDATE*** Microsoft has made it official, they are acquiring Skype for $8.5 Billion: Click here for the full story from GigaOm.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that tomorrow morning, Microsoft will announce their acquisition of Skype. They’re apparently paying 8.5 Billion for it, too. Their plan (from what I know based on Kara Swisher’s blog post here: http://t.co/zdgZEh1) is to integrate Skype into Windows Live Messenger. So in other words, RIP Skype (as we know and love/tolerate it).

This could potentially be detrimental to the future of high quality calling over the Internet, and especially video conferencing if they discontinue Skype as a separate app. If this just becomes a “feature” of Windows Live Messenger, all the momentum Skype has had will be lost. Especially that name (although I wouldn’t think even Microsoft would be stupid enough to ditch the brand name for something “Live” related). There’s a reason why Apple decided to make Face Time separate instead of just adding “iChat with video” to its iOS devices. The mainstream public grasped onto “Face Time” much more than just iChat with video calling built-in. I even heard a rap song mention iPhone 4 with Face Time! Well it’s the same thing with Skype; As a separate app that focused on that one thing, it caught on and did very well.

I guess what scares me the most is, if Microsoft really fumbles this, what other product is ready to take over? If you’re answering with Face Time, I would whole-heartedly agree if it were accessible from more than just Apple devices. At this point, if I want to get in touch with non-Apple friends, it’s pretty much Skype or nothing.

So Microsoft I implore you: Go ahead and put it into your Windows Live thingamajig…but keep the option open for people to use it as a stand-alone product with the Skype name.

Oh and while I’m imploring… Apple: please make your Face Time product available on Windows. Then I’d feel 100% confident that Face Time could pick up where Skype left off and Internet telephony could become even more awesome.

Of course I suppose there is a chance that Microsoft could actually make the Skype experience better after the disaster that Skype 5 was. Unfortunately though, my gut feeling isn’t so good.

Bumper Refunds

Apple could have made it so you’d have to contact them, wait on hold for a length of time to talk to someone, blah blah blah etc etc. to get your refund for the bumper you purchased.  Instead, they made it completely hassle-free and decided they’d *automatically* refund your bumper purchase if you purchased it using a credit card.  If you paid cash at an Apple Store, Apple stated on their site that you can walk in with your receipt and get your refund that way.

If you hadn’t yet gotten a case or bumper for your iPhone, you can search for “iPhone 4 Case Program” in the App store.  Yes, they’ve actually made an app for this and you can log in and select a case, be it a bumper from Apple or one of many reputable third party case manufacturers.

Say what you will about Steve Jobs supposed frustrated attitude at their Press Conference last Friday, but at least in the end they go way out of their way to make things right by their customers.  If you have any experiences to share regarding getting a refund from your local Apple store, do let me know about it!

Wow what a great Christmas this has been!  I have to thank my dear girlfriend Vanessa for all the effort she went through to get me some really amazing things.  First of all, she got me a signed photo of Leo Laporte (founder and CEO of TWiT.tv) and a blanket with the twit logo that she hand-stitched in for me.  Plus, she got me TWiT stickers (I wanted some to put on my car), and a Twitter shirt with my twitter name on it.

I also got a Magic Mouse, plenty of comfortable and warm clothes, new slippers that I’m really diggin, and concert tickets to see U2 coming up in June.  So all in all a great christmas!
